Life is stressful and adjusting to this new reality is difficult — particularly for those who live with autism and other developmental disabilities, and their families. We want you to know we’re here to help you continue the medically necessary services your child needs.

Acorn Health has been developing new safety protocols to protect your family, and our team. We’ve identified ways to move to home-based care when possible, and extend remote services where it is medically appropriate.

Acorn is approved to provide telehealth supervision and telehealth family training to help reduce in-person contact. Staff are also trained to protect personal health information.

Why we’re working so hard to safely continue services

Children with autism who suspend services can experience a regression of skills and an increase in challenging behaviors. Progress on complicated treatment protocols, such as Skills Based Training, can be lost. Now, with school closures and social distancing, COVID-19 has given even more disruption that can impact our clients negatively.

It is our mission to partner with families that need us in supporting their child’s progress, especially through the toughest times. Now more than ever, we are committed to providing access to care for those we serve.

About Acorn Health’s safety protocols

Because we work in close physical proximity to clients, we’ve always had careful standards: If a child is sick, sessions are postponed until the family is well enough for services to resume. Staff illness results in either short-term coverage from another clinical team member, or rescheduling sessions.

Now, given the COVID-19 outbreak, Acorn Health has added new, strict safeguards

  • We now screen employees and clients as they enter Acorn Health centers; anyone with symptoms is asked to return home and seek medical attention.
  • Our high standards of cleanliness in our centers are higher, with daily cleaning and special focus on high-touch surfaces.
  • We ask that family members not go past the reception area during pick-up and drop-off, so we can further control our clinical spaces.
  • Hand sanitizer and disinfectants are available across all our centers.
  • We encourage home-based services, where available.
  • Any staff or client that has traveled to a location under the CDC advisory must self-quarantine.

Acorn’s leadership team is monitoring the latest information about COVID-19 each day, following guidance from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), as well as other national, state and local health agencies. As needed, we will update families, team members and others about our response to the outbreak, possibly, including disruption of service.
